1. Locating lye and safety precautions

- Lye should be handled with utmost care. Lye or sodium hydroxide is one of the essentials in soap making procedure. Lye measures differently when in different form. Therefore, one use accurate measures of lye.

- Lye should be tightly capped, or else lye crystals can be formed if the container absorbs water from the air. Also it can weaken lye causing formation of solid lumps.

- Lye is highly reactive with metals like aluminum, tin and zinc. It can also remove paint.

- Lye, lye/water or even the freshly made soaps can cause irritation or burns on the skin. In such a case one should always rinse hands with vinegar and rise them in running water. It can also damage your eyes.

2. Equipment list

- One container made of lye resistant material for mixing.
- One heatproof container.
- Wooden spoon, rubber spatula, plastic, and stainless steel.
- 2 thermometers of glass or steel.
- Sunglasses for eye protection and rubber gloves. (If necessary.)
- Accurate weighing scales and soap making mold.
- Measuring spoon, potholders, and wire whisk (optional).

4. Making Herbal soap
The addition of pure essential oils, instead of replacing water in the soap making recipe, is the best way of making herbal soap. For 1lb soaps 1 teaspoon or 2 tablespoon of essential oils should be used.

5. Superfatting soap
Superfatting the soap can be done by adding 2-4 tablespoon of extra fats like castor oil. Also, by subtract 0.2 oz lye from 1lb batch soap recipe, the soap can be made superfat.
